Settlement Process Health : Settlement Process -

The SOS health staff at VRSA can provide orientation as well as pre- and post-test counselling before your medical exam. They will also explain how the health system works in Canada. Staff can also give presentations on health topics in general and HIV / AIDS education in particular, for school, church or community groups.

Immigration related health issues:

When you go for your Immigration Medical Exam (IME) you will be given a variety of tests, including those for T.B. syphilis and HIV / AIDS. You must do your exam in the time given before you can receive your eligibility document from CIC.

Work permit & medical exams

Once you have completed your exams (and the refugee application process) you may apply for a work permit. Allow an interval of about 6 weeks for the results of your medicals to be processed by Ottawa before applying for the work permit.

Interim Federal Health (IFH):

This is free medical coverage provided by the Canadian federal government. It is intended to cover the services of family doctors as well as emergency medical situations for dentists and eye doctors. The initial coverage period is for one year and the expiry date is shown on your eligibility document. See one of the VRSA health staff for more detailed information.

IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to keep this coverage up-to-date. Allow at least one month for the renewal. If your coverage has lapsed you will not be able to get medical attention.

Medical Services Program (MSP): This is provincial coverage used by residents of British Columbia. If you have been accepted as a Convention Refugee you have 3 months to change over to this program instead of the temporary federal one, which is only for claimants. VRSA staff can assist you to make the application.
