Basic Needs

For all these services, contact Inland Refugee Society at VRSA, 778-328-8888, ext 26, or come to our office at Suite 430- 411Dunsmuir Street.  This is downtown at the corner with Homer Street, across the road from Holy Rosary Cathedral.

Food Bank

We operate a weekly food bank to assist newly -arrived refugee claimants who are not receiving other financial assistance.  Most of the food is non- perishable but is supplemented with fresh produce.

Families or individuals in need can apply in person at VRSA, for first-time assessment and registration.  Families with infants and young children may also be eligible for assistance in buying milk or milk formula.

Distribution time: Wednesday afternoon 2:00 pm, 4th floor, 411 Dunsmuir St.

Free Store

We distribute seasonal clothing and household items at no charge to registered clients, adults and children.  Items are displayed in racks as in a small store.  Clients can choose their own items freely.

Other options: Also look for stores called “Thrift Shops”.  They sell very low cost, clean, second-hand items.

Emergency Accommodation

We assist claimants to find emergency accommodation. If you need emergency accommodation, contact Inland Refugee Society early in the day, as shelters fill up quickly.   Accommodation may be in a shelter, a hostel or with another agency.  Beds may be in a dormitory or individual rooms.  In many cases the accommodation will only be for one night. Sometimes longer stays can be arranged.  Most emergency accommodation can be found at no charge but some places charge a small fee.

The city also keeps a list of emergency shelters. See Emergency shelter

Other free food distribution:

The city publishes a list of agencies and churches in the central area that provide free meals for anyone in need.  See VRSA staff for the list.  Also see Bargain food

Other Emergency Assistance

If you are facing other emergency situations and needing assistance, contact your VRSA staff worker as soon as possible to discuss the situation and get other referrals.
